Who is a Health Coach:
- A health coach is a practitioner who has been trained as an expert in how to influence lasting change as it relates to health, mindset, and behaviors.
- The goal of a health coach is to empower his/her clients to create new lifelong habits by investigating the psychology and root causes behind the issues they are facing that prevent change.
- The relationship between the health coach and the client is one that gives power to the client and motivates them to make their own positive health choices. This is achieved through mentoring and support in the areas of sleep and relaxation, exercise and movement, nutrition, stress management, and healthy relationships.
What does a Health Coach do?
- Focuses on a functional/holistic approach to health using evidence-based principles for lifestyle and diet.
- Works with a client to achieve health and lifestyle goals and helps to identify roadblocks that may be in the way of a client reaching their goal and staying committed.
- Empowers the client to "take the wheel" in their own health journey by building new habits and facilitating long-term change.
- Often works in conjunction with other health practitioners such as doctors, naturopathic doctors, dieticians, holistic nutritionists, and personal trainers to provide support and accountability with treatment plans.
- Understands and acknowledge the integral contribution of other healthcare providers (both allopathic and holistic) including the need to work cooperatively with the goal of achieving the best possible client outcome.
- Creates action plans that assist with goals for overcoming health challenges, weight loss, managing disease, and helping to support protocols, healthy eating, exercise routines, and overall wellness goals.
- A health coach understands a one-size-fits-all protocol is not effective and instead takes into account the complete health history, emotional state, and lifestyle habits of an individual to assist in discovering the root cause of his or her health issues.
- Monitors the client’s personal health plan in order to reinforce participation in the achievement of the health goals.
- Offers community education to the public in a teaching capacity or by assisting in the development of curriculum, writing articles, and/or publishing books.
- Refers the client to other health care professionals as deemed appropriate.
